Airventurers Club Board Meeting
September 22, 2012
Al Lane called the meeting to order at 10:10. Present were Claudio Losacco, Mike Savage, Cliff Busick, Yoni Boujo, Marv & Judy Rifkin and non-board members Jeanne Lane, Lorraine & Dan Simansky and Laura & Barry Rainy. There was a quorum.
The minutes of the August board meeting were read by Judy Rifkin and approved as read.
Treasurers Report: Joel had emailed copies of three reports before the meeting, since he was unable to be here. Total income YTD is $3735.00, all of it from dues. Total expenses YTD are $2699.82, leaving a credit balance of $1035.18. The October & November dinner meetings will add approximately $56 in expenses, and the brochure will be several hundred dollars. The only other big expense will be the holiday party. The separate report on fly-ins shows a credit balance of $1936.69, but that’s because Canyon de Chelly has not been finalized, nor has Cottonwood. The other fly-ins have a zero or close to zero balance with the exception of San Luis Obispo, which has a $43.10 credit balance. The reports are attached.
Dinners: Marv Rifkin remarked that the turn-out for the Sept. dinner meeting was disappointing, and suggested that more information on the speakers be sent out in advance to pique interest. The Oct. dinner meeting will be at the Valley Inn, and the speaker will be Kristin Davies, pilot of the Goodyear Blimp.
Sunshine: Joan McMullen sprained her wrist in a fall, Diane Busick has had surgery to correct a long-standing problem, Art Wasserman is in a rehab facility and improving daily. Barry Rainy will have surgery on the OTHER foot next week.
Safety: Nothing to report.
Website: Nothing to report.
Membership: Dan Katz, a member of Van Nuys Prop, attended the Sept. dinner meeting and seemed to enjoy meeting us and hearing about what we do. Marv Rifkin moved that we ask him if he’s interested in membership, and send him an application if he is. Judy Rifkin seconded, and it was pass unanimously. Al will contact him, and if he is interested, Don Eisenberg will probably be his sponsor.
Fly-ins: Three couples attended Canyon de Chelly – the Murrells got weathered out – there will be a report and pictures in the Oct. Flyer. Mike Savage said the November fly-in will be to Apple Valley for lunch at a new restaurant, with some airmanship activities along the way.
Speakers: Al reported that Kristin Davies, pilot of the Goodyear Blimp is scheduled for October, and Bill Reeds for November. The Holiday Party in December will be at the 94th Aero Squadron.
Old Business: There was a lot of discussion regarding the brochures. Everyone felt the text should be centered and larger, and Judy will make the corrections and send them to the board members for approval. Marv Rifkin moved we purchase 1000 brochures from Image Stuff (in color, folded) Claudio Losacco seconded, and it was passed unanimously.
New Business: The nomination committee’s proposed slate of officers for 2013 is as follows:
President – Marv Rifkin
Vice President – Barry Rainy
Treasurer – Judy Rifkin
Secretary – Bernie Harris
The proposed slate will be published in the October Flyer, and also be emailed to the membership on the same day. As always, nominations will be accepted from the floor before the vote at the November meeting.
2013 Meeting Schedule: Al brought 2013 calendars and we scheduled the board and dinner meetings for the year. Dinner meetings will be 1/15, 2/19, 3/19/, 4/16, 5/21, 6/18,
8/17 (hangar party/CMA airshow), 9/17, 10/15, 11/19, 12/7 or 8 (holiday party). Board meetings will be 1/26, 2/16, 3/30, 4/27, 5/18, 6/29, 7/27, 8/24, 9/28, 10/26, 11/23, 12/28.
2013 Fly-Ins: Al brought a 2-page list of possible fly-in locations; some of which we have been to, and some not. Tentatively, we have scheduled El Centro to watch the Blue Angels practice for January, Las Vegas for February, another Poker Run for March, the Annenberg Collection in Palm Springs for April, and someplace on a lake for the 4th of July week-end. We won’t do the picnic this year, but instead we will have a joint hangar party with the Raineys and their friend, with full Airventurer participation as regards work and costs.
Holiday Party Budget: Al brought last year’s budget figures for the holiday party, and there was a lot of discussion about how much to charge, wine, no-host bar, president’s gifts, etc. It was decided to table any further discussion because we were trying to compare apples to oranges and we didn’t have enough information. Al and Marv will get together next week and hash things out and present them to the board.
The next board meeting will be at Signature Aviation on October 27th with a lunch fly-in to Cable afterwards, weather permitting.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 12:30.
Judy Rifkin, Acting Secretary
